In the Mexican and the Mexican American culture, "machismo" demands that men be hypermasculine, domineering, controlling, and without the slightest hint of femininity. Gay Mexican American (GMA) men suffer from more mental health problems than their heterosexual counterparts. These range from substance use disorders, affective disorders, and suicide. I designed Mil Máscaras, a paper-mâché replica of the masks worn by Mexican Lucha Libre wrestlers, for Third Space Gallery's Graphic Design Graduate Student Exhibition. Its purpose is to bring awareness to GMA men's struggles when grappling with machismo and issues of sexual identity.
